MAINEMAINEUndecidedMaine is currently undecided on Ballot #7. There appears to be a broader push to reduce audit requirements as a means of lessening the administrative burden on jurisdictions. However, our concern is that reducing these requirements could undermine the primary purpose of the program, which is to verify that the transmittal process is being conducted accurately and in accordance with IFTA requirements.
As a jurisdiction that receives funds through the monthly transmittal process, Maine has a vested interest in ensuring the integrity, accuracy, and consistency of this process across all jurisdictions.

Additionally, why not wait until the current study has been completed before making changes to the audit requirements? The study may provide valuable information to help determine whether changes are warranted and, if so, what approach would best maintain program integrity while addressing the administrative burden on jurisdictions.

As a possible compromise, if the audit requirements are reduced, Maine would suggest considering an increase in the number of compliance reviews conducted each year. This could help offset the reduction in formal audits while maintaining an appropriate level of oversight and confidence in the transmittal process.
